I found a 1963 printing of this book in a used bookstore in Lynchburg for $5.50 several years ago. Still, one gets the feel of what is otherwise only told. To my disappointment only 4 of these recordings were of songs presented in the book. I waited to write my review until I had listened to a cd of the author performing traditional ballads: "Ballads From Her Appalachian Family Tradition." This is recordings from 1961 of the author performing 16 ballads-mostly a cappella, some with dulcimer. The book includes words and music for 42 songs from the author's time growing up and how they figured into the life of their family. Well-written and full of precious memories and stories. A nice complement to Sharyn McCrumb's "Ballad novels"-with the character Nora Bonesteel presumably being about the age of this author. A touching memoir of the author (1922-2015) growing up in the 1920s and 1930s.
